LANDSCAPE IN TUSCANY

 November 18-23, 2002

Few areas in the world can boast the variety of landscape distinguishing the territory of Siena. Our locations are in the south: the gentle valleys of the Arbia and Orcia rivers, framed by slender rows of poplars, invites one to climb up the hills. Alongside the land dries up into the characteristic scenery of the "crete" (clay hills), bread white, plunging down into eroded forrows and clinging to the proud, isolated cypresses atop the cliffs, like exclamation marks. Always we will find an inviting lane along which to travel... We will drive and walk along the country roads looking to discover the secret portions of this land and our personal emotions.  And here we will meet the villages of Asciano, San Quirico d'Orcia, Pienza, Buonconvento, Montalcino, and the monastery of Sant'Anna in Camprena, where "The English Patient" was filmed. Here we'll have a special lesson about light. 

The rooms, distributed between the farmhouses Casabianca and Poggio Bacoca, are looking out over the surrounding countryside with views of Pienza and Monte Amiata. 

The menu changes with the seasons, following the tradition of using fresh produce in the creation of meals.  Pasta is fresh and cakes always home-made. Dinner is served with the family on big tables making every evening a celebration.

Poche aree geografiche del mondo possono vantare la varietà di ambienti che caratterizzano la Toscana. La zona in cui lavoreremo è la parte sud della provincia di Siena, tra la valle d'Arbia e la Val d'Orcia, nello scenario dolce e drammatico delle crete senesi, punteggiato qua e la da cipressi solitari: i punti esclamativi di questo paesaggio superbo. 

In questo periodo si lavora bene, le giornate sono più corte, quindi non c'è bisogno di alzarsi troppo presto la mattina ne' di far troppo tardi la sera per trovare buone luci, e con il sole che pian piano se ne va nell'emisfero australe avremo ombre lunghe anche a mezzogiorno. Le foschie estive hanno lasciato il posto ad un'aria più pulita, ma la mattina le nebbie sono spesso padrone dei fondovalle, regalandoci una suggestione imperdibile.

19,00h: welcome drink, presentation of the workshop and dinner.

 november 19-22:

workshop: theory with slide shows (composition, study of lines, forms, colours and lights, psychology of the visual perception); shooting time during the better hours of light, looking to be in the right place in the right moment. Tripod and pola filter will be precious. Editing, portfolio review.

saturday, november 23:

breakfast, certificate of participation.

La nostra base sarà presso l'agriturismo "Il Rigo" che si trova nel cuore delle crete, tra Pienza e San Quirico d'Orcia. Le camere, distribuite tra il podere Casabianca e il Poggio Bacoca che lo fronteggia, si affacciano sulle nostre locations e volendo si può fare un pò di straordinario dalle finestre. Il menu cambia con le stagioni perché la tradizione vuole che si usino prodotti freschi per la preparazione dei pasti. La cena è servita insieme alla famiglia su grandi tavolate, ed ogni sera è una celebrazione del buon gusto toscano.
